The Benefits of Dental Implants

Peter Norris • September 27, 2017

Dental implants are a great way to replace missing teeth and are a much better option than traditional alternatives such as bridges or dentures for a number of reasons. Advances in technology have led to dental implants becoming a superior choice for those needing teeth replaced. Dental implants are replacement tooth rods that provide a strong foundation for permanent or removable teeth, which are made to match the look and feel of your natural teeth.

What are the Benefits of Dental Implants?

  • Appearance – Dental implants look like your own teeth and provide the pleasant appearance of a full smile.
  • Comfort – Implants eliminate the discomfort commonly associated with removable dentures.
  • Convenience – With dental implants you won’t have to worry about removing dentures which can be an inconvenience, and you also don’t have to deal with messy adhesives.
  • Durability – Implants can last for many years and even a lifetime with proper care, while bridges typically only last five to seven years.
  • Easier Eating – Dental implants permit you to eat your favorite foods without the fear of dentures sliding or causing pain, and they provide a natural bite to allow for the full taste of the food you eat.
  • Oral Health – Implants do not require your other teeth to be altered like bridges do, and also allow for easier access in between teeth which is advantageous for good oral hygiene.
  • Self-Esteem – Getting your smile back will help you feel better about yourself and improve your self-esteem, allowing you to laugh and smile without being self-conscious.
  • Speech – Dental implants won’t slip unlike poor-fitting dentures, which can cause people to mumble or slur their speech and make everyday words hard to pronounce.

Getting Dental Implants

While dental implants are a great option, they do require a bit of time and you won’t be able to get them done all in the same day. There are four steps involved in the process and along the way your dentist will make impressions of your teeth and create a model of your bite which will make your new implant match the rest of your teeth.

  1. The first step is an individualized implant strategy plan which addresses your specific needs by a team of professionals trained in oral surgery and restorative dentistry.
  2. The tooth root implant is placed into the bone socket of your missing tooth. Your jawbone will grow around the metal post and anchor it in your jaw which can take six to 12 weeks.
  3. After the implant is bonded to your jawbone a small connector post called an abutment is attached to the post to hold your new tooth securely in place.
  4. Finally, your replacement tooth, or crown, will be attached to your abutment and will look, function and feel like your natural teeth.
