Dental fillings are the most common dental procedure that All Smiles Dentistry provides, which involves restoring a tooth or multiple teeth that have been damaged by decay and bringing them back to their normal function and shape. When Dr. Norris or any one of our other doctors administers a filling, they remove the decayed tooth material, clean the affected area, and then fill in the cleaned-out cavity with a filling material. It’s best to discuss with your dentist the best kind of filling material you should use, but here is an introduction to the different types of dental fillings that are available:
Amalgam fillings are one of the oldest types still in use. Ancient mummies in Egypt are found to have amalgam fillings made of gold dust and mercury. Today they are comprised of a mix of metals, including tin, copper, silver, and zinc, but mostly mercury. Fillings made with amalgam are typically inexpensive, long-lasting, and incredibly strong. Mercury is toxic in some forms, so we don’t do amalgam fillings at All Smiles Dentistry.
These types of fillings are made from glass and acrylic resin. Composite fillings look a lot more natural than most other types, making them the preferred choice among those who are self-conscious about their smiles. These filings are perfect for small to medium fillings and for the front.

Fillings made from gold are among the most durable in the industry, lasting up to more than 20 years if they are taken care of properly. These fillings are more expensive than others but are well worth the price when you factor in the replacement cost of fillings that don’t last as long.
These fillings are most similar to gold, though there are differences. Much like gold, porcelain fillings tend to require more than one visit and are slightly more permanent. They tend to resemble real teeth much more than the other types of fillings, which is why they are preferred among many patients.
Resin or glass ionomer fillings are not typically used on permanent teeth. These types of fillings are good insulators, but wear down a little faster when used on biting surfaces. They are most often used on baby teeth since they are perfect for filling in small areas of tooth decay.
